I should add, while I have some misgivings about the iPad (mostly related to the closed nature of the device and the App Store software distribution channel), I'm cautiously optimistic.
Yes, it is neither fish nor fowl nor good red meat. I already have an iPhone and a MacBook (the devices that bracket the iPad), but I would be surprised if we don't see some unexpected applications which would only really be possible on a tablet device.
